Cathal began his musical studies at the age of 13,  his first and primary instrument is Guitar. Becoming interested in composition he enrolled in Trinity College Dublin to study Music.


During his four years Cathal studied with a wide range of teachers. Studying conducting and music pedagogy with Dr Orla Flannagan and John Dexter. Cathal had the privilege of studying composition with several high profile composers such as Elis Czerniak, Garrett Sholdice, Nicholas Brown and Judith Ring.


Cathal continued his Guitar studies with Alan Grundy and Jake Curran ( Niall Horan). Cathal has also received lessons in Jazz Trumpet from Glen Carr. Since graduating Cathal has been in receipt of the ‘Crash Works’ mentorship programme in the National Concert Hall, which has allowed Cathal to continue his studies in composition and conducting.


Cathal has recorded electric Bass for Rosa Nutty’s upcoming album ‘Work Still Blue’, conducted the TCD Big Band, and sang in the TCD Campanile Choir. Cathal is currently working to attain a Fellowship in Classical Guitar from Victoria College of Music under the instruction of Kieran Mc Donnell and studying Classical Piano with Olive Powderly.
